About Me

This is Kathleen Menjivar (she/her)

She's a multidisciplinary artist based in Iowa, and even as a young child, she found that her imagination extended infinitely beyond the endless cornfields that she was surrounded by. Inspired by a mixture of western and hispanic folklore, illustration, and animal symbolism-her artwork stalks the line between the fantastical and unnerving. Her goals have always been to tell stories, while still allowing the freedom for my audience to create their own narrative. In May of 2024, she's since graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Within the shelter of her abode, you'll often find Kathleen reading an unhealthy amount of historical romance, conjuring the power of her ancestors in baking, and watching scary movies with her mother.

She's currently looking for work opportunities.

Artist Statement

What I create through my art are stories. My art coexists as the extension of my heart and imagination, presenting figurative works that metaphorically, and physically look back at the viewer. I believe my compositions to rely heavily on the familiarity of the natural world, most often presenting versions of animalistic symbolism and humanistic qualities that I find fascinating and personal, yet also ground themselves in the simplistic and gritty detailing of my line work.  I

’ve found that the existence of the folklore and cultural upbringing that was given to me has consistently aided my creative ideas, fondly and tersely encouraging me to take them to heart. Poetically speaking, the creatures and characters I present forth are just snippets of a narrative of which I gladly invite others to write for themselves, however much thought I may have originally given them. These projects have always been meant to be as delightful as they are strange.
